Sainsbury's Supermarkets has a very large number of suppliers of own-brand products. It has the goal of influencing suppliers to reduce their direct environmental impacts and improve the environmental quality of own-brand products through more sustainable sourcing.

B & Q supports its suppliers in the moves to being greener through its QUEST for suppliers programme. QUEST involves the setting of targets for the achievement of a number of “principles”. For example principles 6 (Environmental Policy and Awareness ), 7 (Environmental Action and Achievements) and key environmental issues through principle 10 (Product Integrity). For example it had set a target that: “All suppliers should achieve at least grade B for QUEST 6, QUEST 7 and QUEST 10”.
Acheivements at the end of 2002 were:
75% of suppliers had achieved A or B grades in QUEST 6.
74% of suppliers had achieved A or B grades QUEST 7.
22% of suppliers had achieved A or B grades in QUEST 10.*
where A is reserved for “leadership, commitment and innovation” and E for a “major problem which contravenes B & Q’s environmental policies; the grades in between reflect good or average performance accordingly”.
